This Saturday, it’s Heavyweight time, as the champ Deontay Wilder (40-0-1; 39 KO) defends his WBC title against Dominic Breazeale (20-1; 18 KO). Showtime Championship Boxing Wilder vs. Breazeale takes place this Saturday night. Deontay Wilder is the WBC champ and thus holds just one slice of the heavyweight pie. Anthony Joshua holds the other three. Basically, for Wilder to keep his claim as the best heavyweight in the world, he cannot lose this fight.
Favorite in the Fight
Wilder has long been viewed as the heavyweight division’s golden child. Wilder was matched soft, brought up slowly against easy out opponents. That basically changed last year when he fought Ortiz in Fury in two exciting fights. Those were serious, serious challenges, and he faced them and still holds that WBC belt. Now he’s back to fighting someone outside the top 10 and those “soft” criticisms return. As of now, any win for Wilder over someone not named Joshua or Fury does not matter much to the boxing world.
Wilder’s power is unmatched in 2019 boxing. Only two men have ever gone the distance against him and one was Tyson Fury, who used everything he had to make it off the mat in that fight. His power often comes at the expense of technique and defense. When Wilder is at his most dangerous, seeking the KO, he is also at his most vulnerable. However, that has worked out well for him so far.
Breazele Looking to Bounce Back
Breazeale has one major fight to his name, a 7th round TKO loss to Anthony Joshua. In the Joshua fight, Breazeale didn’t do terribly bad in that fight, making it longer than anyone else had against Joshua. However, when the post-fight praise focuses on your heart, toughness, and tenacity, it means you were getting destroyed. Breazeale simply is not on the level of a Joshua or Wilder.
There’s a lot of trash-talk and what certainly seems like legitimate bad blood here. Perhaps they are just selling the fight, but it sure appears that these two men do not like each other. Breazeale simply hates Wilder and considers him disrespectful and dishonorable. Perhaps that motivation is the only thing going for him in this fight, but it can just as easily make him overaggressive and lead to him getting flattened.
Wilder Wins
Regardless of the mindset of these guys when they enter the ring, there is just no path to victory for Dominic Breazeale. From a technical aspect, this fight will not be that pretty to watch, but you do not tune into a Wilder fight to get a lesson in technical boxing, you tune in for unadulterated violence. Breazeale will get plenty of that and more than he can handle. Wilder knocks out Breazeale in the 4th round to defend his WBC belt.
