The Course
Sedgefield Country Club is, located in Greensboro North Carolina and is a par 70, 7100-yard course that should be rather gettable this week. Typically, a par 70 is seen as a course that lends itself to less scoring because it has less par 5’s, which is what typically provide a lot of the birdies and eagles on tour. This course is rather gettable and allows for a lot of short iron play on the par 4’s. Most holes do not really favor a massive driver, as the short guys can get to the great spots typically just as much as the longer hitters. I think this week will be really focused on driving accuracy and iron shots. This also means that I believe bad scramblers may be okay this week because if you are scrambling, you aren’t winning anyways. The winner of this golf tournament will probably look like he is doing everything right, so I am not concerned with bad around the green stats. I want good accuracy, great shorter iron play, and a putter that can knock down 7-10 footers enough to go low.
The Golfers
Webb Simpson will seem overpriced compared to a lot of guys in this range to the average fan, but I really like him this weekend. Webb is probably playing the best golf of his career and it has seemingly come from his putter. Webb is one of those guys that just kills it T2G and seemingly misses too many putts. You roster him saying, “If Webb can get hot with the putter, he can win this.” Now, it seems like the putter is around a lot more often. Webb’s course history comes from a time where I don’t think he was even as good as he is now. I think the course history will lead people to play Webb and I think it is warranted. Webb’s daughter is actually named after this course. Just think about that one. He LOVES this golf course and I think he’s hard to not click into my lineups this week.
Joaquin Niemann will be in my lineups until further notice. This kid is a stud just waiting to break through and this course seems like it could be the one. The field isn’t like what he has seen recently. The course is ripe for birdies, something Niemann is very capable of getting. Last week, Niemann started off great but putted poorly and struggled to get anything going, but the game was there at times. Niemann’s driver should benefit him here because he is an accurate driver and he should be able to really get a lot of short irons and wedges into these par 4’s. I want to roster talent and upside and Niemann is the embodiment of that.
Julian Suri has been surging lately and last week’s performance really gives me confidence in him this week. I typically fade these Euro Tour golfers that travel to the U.S. rarely until I see that the game translates well. Suri didn’t seem to miss a step and I think he can take advantage of a weak field this week. Suri isn’t a household name, but he is rising in the golf ranks and has the ability to go low this week. Suri is one of my favorite GPP plays this week.
**This tournaments field is rather weak, especially at the bottom. I do not suggest going super overboard on any one of these plays down here because none of them are truly consistently good golfers.**
Danny Lee intrigues me this week. Lee is a good iron player that can take advantage of a course that really emphasizes iron play. Lee has been all over the map this year, but he does have the talent potential to pop for a T5 this weekend. The upside is hard to pass up down here, and I will be relying on the upside for a lot of these picks
Johnson Wagner is a guy that I have used a lot at times before and he seems to be back into form recently. In his last 4 tournaments, Wagner has shot -11 or better. Granted, this didn’t win him every tournament, but it does show that he is a guy that can go out and put up a competitive score at an easy course like this on a consistent basis. I think Wagner will be really low owned and I do like him more than most guys in this range this week.
Dylan Meyer is one of my favorite true punts this week. Simply put, he is talented. Meyer is a new professional and only 23 years old. Meyer had a successful college career and should be a regular on the tour for a long time. Meyer has shown that he has the ability to pop very early in his career. If I can get a guy with T10 upside at this price in this field, I will roll the dice with the unknown. This also goes with Norman Xiong, who I can’t suggest because he’s been terrible. I know Xiong is talented and I want to be there when he finally shows up, but its probably not a great play if you want to have a 6/6 team.
