There are lots of interesting aspects to this week’s Palmetto Championship. For starters, it takes place on a course that has never been used for a PGA Tour event before. This event is actually replacing the Canadian Open due to current border restrictions that do not make that event feasible this year.
Another interesting aspect is how last weekend’s Memorial shook out with Jon Rahm being forced to withdraw due to a positive COVID test. That was totally unexpected, and different sportsbooks handled it differently. The odds of that happening again are slim, but it looms over this week’s event.

Avoid Big Names Ahead of Next Week’s U.S. Open
Golf betting is often dictated by recent form or past success on a particular course. You can throw those out the window for this one as this is the first tour event at Congaree and last week’s winner won’t even be here. (I am referring to Rahm)
In terms of form, top-ranked Dustin Johnson is not looking great right now. He is at the top of the odds list based on reputation and history. The reality is that he can win any weekend and the oddsmakers have to make sure that his public nature is accounted for or else there will be too much liability. If you price him to high the books will definitely get steamed.
Brooks Koepka is the next highest-ranked golfer in the field and another one of those players that can win any week and on any course. This is the week right before the U.S. Open which is another factor as some players, especially the top guys might be using this more as a tune-up more than they might other events. The simple fact is they don’t need the money as much and might be trying some things out.
There are 156 players in the field, so these odds might look bigger than you think since the past few events only had 120. Tyrell Hatton looks like a pretty good play at 14/1, as does Matt Fitzpatrick at 16/1. Those might not be household names, but there is a reason they are getting the odds they are. This might be one of those events where a “stack” of players could make the most sense.
Best Bets
Tyrell Hatton or Matt Fitzpatrick: This gives some exposure to the top group of players without paying too much of a premium. Both have had their moments throughout the season and are not going to hold back to save anything for next week either.
Lucas Glover: He is a very interesting bet this week as one of the few players with some real familiarity with the course. He is an ambassador. We will take any advantage we can get.
Bryson Nimmer: He is another one who is local to the area and has some familiarity with the course.
