This week, we are taking a look at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier in PGA. This is the first year, this tournament has gone by this name, normally being referred to as The Greenbrier Classic, but this year, they have changed the direction and giving appreciation to the troops of the United States of America.
The tournament has been around since 2010 when it first began being played. This tournament took over the spot left open by the famous Buick Open, which was played each year in Flint, Michigan. The PGA Tour made the decision to change the location of the tournament and refer to the new tournament at The Greenbrier Classic.
The tournament is played at The Old White TPC Course at The Greenbrier and is located in Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The weather forecasters out in West Virginia are calling for the first two days to be hot and humid but the weekend to be very pleasant with temps in the mid 70’s to low 80’s. The tough part will be on Friday where they are calling for temps in the mid 90’s and high humidity.
The course plays out at Par 70 and measures in at about 7,286 yards. The fairways are nothing to worry about here as you could drive a fully loaded tractor-trailer onto these fairways. Seriously, if a golfer misses the fairway here, they were really not trying to play well because they are wide and long. The tricky part becomes the greens. They are bentgrass greens and they are expected to be fast. They are calling a bit of rain on Friday but other than that, it appears clear. That means the greens will run fast, as they are meant to.
The A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier will all get started on Thursday morning, July 5 and run through Sunday, July 8, 2018.
Top Bet at A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier – Brian Harman 33/1
The top bet for the A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier is Brian Harman at 33/1. I’m not really a big fan of the top level guys this week and think that you can get better value by dropping down a few spots and looking at someone like Harman. Harman had a stretch last year where he was one of the top guys in golf but then sort of fell off the path of success and started to slack off. He is now back to playing really good golf finishing 6th, 36th and 14th place in his last three tournaments. Those type of numbers doesn’t deserve 33/1!
Top Longshot at A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier – Andrew Putnam 66/1
Our longshot play of the week is Andrew Putnam at 66/1. Putnam doesn’t get the credit he deserves and is playing really good golf. That means he will retain his high odds because most people won’t touch him and we can still catch him at a decent price. Putnam has played really good this year and has finished inside the top 20 in four of the last eight tournaments he has played in. At 66/1, he will be our top Longshot for this week.
Top Fade at A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier – Phil Mickelson at 16/1
My top fade this week is Phil Mickelson at 16/1. Mickelson simply hasn’t played well enough lately to deserve these type of odds. He does get a little credit because he has a home here and knows the course but how can you bet someone who is nearly the favorite, when they haven’t finished in the top 10 but one time all year. Add into the equation that he finished in 20th place last year and in the three prior times he played at The Greenbrier, he missed the cut each of those times. Sometimes I think these guys don’t get enough time in their vacation homes and simply show up to collect a paycheck and enjoy the vacation home.
