Coming into the college football season, Iowa State-Oklahoma looked likely to have major significance for both the Big 12 and College Football Playoff. But the Cyclones have fallen short of high expectations, and the Sooners fell from the ranks of the undefeated with last week’s loss at Baylor.
Iowa State began the season as a top-ten team, so things are not going great in Ames. They must play at a level not seen often enough this season to pull off the upset in Norman.
Oklahoma’s playoff chances are likely done at this point, but the Big 12 title is still there for the taking. Iowa State would love to end their playoff hopes and hurt their Big 12 title chances.

The Cyclones have talent. That is why they were ranked highly to start the season and why they have given the Sooners trouble in recent seasons. Iowa State does not recruit at the level of other programs but they do develop them.
Running back Breece Hall is not in the Heisman race as expected, but he has run for 1,172 yards and 16 touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, DE Will McDonald IV has ten sacks. The defense is one of the best in college football in yards allowed. That group will need to stifle Oklahoma the way that Baylor did.
Oklahoma’s offense had been rolling under freshman QB Caleb Williams, but Baylor was more than ready for him. He was bound to struggle at some point, but it was surprising that he and the Sooners were unable to get through it. Williams did not play well, but Dae Aranda also outcoached Lincoln Riley. Odds are the Sooners fare better this week at home, but that line tells you that oddsmakers are unsure. Defense is still a major issue. The Bears ran for 297 yards, which is a major concern when one of the best running backs in college football is on the other side this week.
The line on this one is telling. This game is in Norman, but the Sooners are a short favorite. If you have believed in Oklahoma all season, you have to stick with them and some great value. But if you thought they were fraudulent, then the Cyclones are a great bet. They have a veteran team against a young QB and have nothing to lose. I love the Cyclones to cover and win straight up.
