Super Bowl National Anthem: Did Guyton Go Over or Under?

Super Bowl National Anthem: Did Guyton Go Over or Under?

Few days and events in sports and entertainment generate as much fanfare as the Super Bowl and Super Bowl Sunday. As the NFL championship game, it is one of the most significant events on the sports calendar every year. But Super Bowl Sunday is just as much about the entertainment aspect, and that includes the Super Bowl national anthem.

For some, the game itself is the highlight. For others, it’s the Super Bowl ads, which are always a hot topic during the game and the next day. And for others, it’s the Super Bowl performers and performances.

Super Bowl betting isn’t all about the serious stuff. Sure, the most interest and money centers around betting on the result of the Super Bowl matchup or Super Bowl props related to the action on the field.

But Super Bowl national anthem betting is part of the less serious action you can get in on. And why not, when so many people are going to be watching? Whether it is to see a favorite performer or a memorable performance, people will be watching.

Did Mickey Guyton’s 2022 Super Bowl National Anthem Performance Go Over or Under?

With a time of around one minute, 51 seconds, Mickey Guyton’s 2022 Super Bowl national anthem performance easily hit the over at sportsbooks around the world.

You can’t watch Guyton’s anthem performance here (because the NFL is the NFL), but you can watch it on YouTube:

Country Star Mickey Guyton to Sing “Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl 56

Whatever your opinion on the singing of the national anthem at sporting events, you have to admit there aren’t many better opportunities as a performer.

While playing the national anthem at sporting events is common, live national anthem performances are not as common. And it is rare that you will see the national anthem broadcast live in its entirety, save for events like the World Series, Daytona 500, or the Super Bowl.

In the history of the Super Bowl, the anthem has been performed at every game but one, to date. At Super Bowl XI, held at the Rose Bowl on January 9, 1977–the earliest Super Bowl date in the game’s history–singer Vikki Carr sang “America the Beautiful” instead of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Who will sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl this year? Country singer Mickey Guyton will sing the anthem before the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals kick things off on Sunday, Feb. 13.

Super Bowl National Anthem Odds: How Long Will Mickey Guyton’s 2022 Anthem Performance Be?

Sportsbooks like BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook don’t have Super Bowl national anthem odds, but many international books do.

The consensus seems to be on 95 to 98 seconds, though some books have the total set above 100 seconds. Will Guyton’s performance go over or under those numbers? There seems to be only one way to go, and it’s not the under.

Do Mickey Guyton’s Two Previous National Anthem Performances Offer a Clue?

There are two known instances of Mickey Guyton singing the national anthem. Last year, she sang the anthem at the 2021 National Memorial Day Concert. That performance was clocked around 85 seconds.

Prior to that occasion, she performed the national anthem at the Country Radio Seminar in 2015. That performance came in around 90 seconds.

Do either of those performances provide a clue on how long the national anthem will be at the Super Bowl this year? In a word, no.

With respect to the other occasions, none have the same viewership that the Super Bowl will have. And with an event like the Super Bowl, you are likely to see a performance that fits the occasion. With that in mind, betting the over makes the most sense.

If you are looking at Super Bowl national anthem performances over the past 15 years to try to get an idea of how long Guyton will sing the anthem, you will see that the shortest was one minute and 30 seconds by Joel and the longest was two minutes and 36 seconds by Keys. A pretty standard length appears to be one minute and 55 seconds.

Super Bowl National Anthem Betting Over/Under Results from the Past 15 Years

  • Overs: 6
  • Unders: 8
  • Pushes: 1

Ultimately, unless you have insider access–and even if you do–Super Bowl national anthem betting is pure guesswork.

While some artists seem very comfortable with it and have the skill and range to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” skillfully, others seem to prefer to stick with a more basic approach. Not everyone can be Whitney Houston or Faith Hill, whose performances were so good they became profitable recordings.

How to Bet on the 2022 Super Bowl National Anthem

When it comes to anthem betting, the classic bet is on the length of the performance. Betting the over/under on how long the national anthem will be is the most popular Super Bowl national anthem betting option, but many books offer other interesting options as well.

In addition to the length of the performance, some sportsbooks will be creative and offer a prop of whether any word will be forgotten or omitted.

It is a simple yes/no prop that usually heavily skews to the “no” side. No one wants to look bad on national TV and be known for one of the worst national anthem performances. In the age of the internet, social media, and smartphones, an embarrassing moment can become a meme in an instant and live on for days, weeks, or even years.

Some sportsbooks might offer bets that reflect the times we live in. Will anyone take a knee during the national anthem? Will there be a raised fist during the national anthem?

Some sportsbooks might also offer odds on the following:

  • Which player is shown first during the anthem?
  • Which coach is shown first during the anthem?
  • Will any scoring drive during the Super Bowl take less time than the national anthem?
