After an exciting round of 16, eight teams remain standing at Euro 2020. A trio of quarterfinalists fulfilled expectations, like Belgium, England, Italy, and Spain.
Denmark had favorable pre-tournament odds, though they needed to navigate losing their best player and needing a wild final day of Group B action to reach the knockout stage.
And then there’s the trio that upset the odds to reach the last eight: the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
For Switzerland, it was not about not having a chance prior to the tournament. But they needed to beat Group A foes Turkey to set up a round of 16 meeting with Euro 2020 favorites France. Switzerland faced elimination with 10 minutes left, trailing 3-1 after three second-half goals by Karim Benzema and Paul Pogba.
Well, they clearly didn’t get the memo that they were supposed to roll over and bow out gracefully. They scored two late goals to send the match to extra time then outlasted France in penalties to shockingly send the favorites packing. In their fifth appearance at the Euros, the Swiss have finally reached the quarterfinals for the first time. Also, it is the first time they have reached this round of a major international tournament–not counting their appearance in the semifinals of the UEFA Nations League two years ago–since reaching the quarterfinals of the 1954 World Cup, which they hosted.
While Switzerland pulled a major upset to reach the quarters, Spain had to avoid a major upset to get here. Like France, they led 3-1 late on before allowing two goals to take the match to extra time. But while France couldn’t find a way past Switzerland, Spain scored twice in extra time to see off Croatia 5-3.

Switzerland vs Spain Preview and Best Bets
After a couple of subpar performances against Group E opponents Sweden and Poland, Spain needed to step it up in attack. And they have, putting five goals past Slovakia in their final group match and another five past Croatia.
Has the beast been unleashed? Will this continue? This is the first time that Spain has scored three or more goals in consecutive matches since 2019. They have not scored three or more goals in three or more consecutive matches since 2017, when they defeated Italy (3-0), Liechtenstein (8-0), and Albania (3-0) in 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
What does Switzerland have left in the tank after their extraordinary, emotional win over France? This isn’t some plucky underdog that is short on talent. Going into Euro 2020, they had the quality to make some noise. Defender Silvan Widmer is the only one of Switzerland’s likely starters for today’s match who does not currently play in one of Europe’s major leagues, and he has several seasons of Serie A experience.
Can they pull off another upset? The odds certainly aren’t in their favor, but don’t be surprised if they do it.

Spain team total over 1.5 – Often enough, the knockout stages end up being full of low-scoring matchups, as advancement is the priority at all costs. But the round of 16 offers some hope that we’ll see goals in the quarterfinals as well.
Switzerland will certainly be inspired and full of confidence after an epic win against France. But this is a good spot, especially with the number moving in the right direction value-wise. Earlier, it was -160, but as the match approaches, it has moved into the -140s.
Five of the eight round of 16 winners scored at least two goals in normal time, while at least one team scored two or more goals in 22 of the 36 group stage matches (61 percent). If Spain is your pick today, this has better value than the moneyline.
