New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox Betting Preview (Aug 12): Field of Dreams Game Should See Lots of Offense

Tonight's most notable MLB betting matchup is not only between two strong American League teams, but it is going to be hosted in Dyersville, Iowa, the home of the story for Field of Dreams.

The Yankees have been playing well of late. They are 8-3 in August and have worked themselves back into the race for the Wild Card and the AL East. COVID has hit the team hard though with several players unavailable due to the illness.

Chicago has the much easier path to the playoffs. They have lost their last two games but still have nearly a 10-game lead in the AL Central. The math is quickly adding up for the other teams.

I am very curious to see how this game looks. It should be quite fun and feature a lot of runs.

New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox Betting Outlook

Yankees Are a Legit Threat but Need to Get Healthy

This has been a very interesting season for the Yankees. A high powered lineup has failed to deliver such that they sought more even more power at the trade deadline. They are playing good ball right now, but COVID has robbed them of two starting pitchers and two lineup regulars. For any team that might be too much to overcome in a playoff race. We will see if the Yankees have the depth to keep the heat on Tampa and Boston above them and stay ahead of Toronto.

Slugger Joey Gallo has not made much of an impression in New York. In 13 games he is batting just .149 and has only one homer. First baseman Anthony Rizzo has been the better of the two acquisitions, but he is down with COVID right now. He and catcher Gary Sanchez are two big bats unavailable to the team due to illness right now. How quickly they recover might determine the Yankees’ season.

Chicago Needs to Stay Sharp Down the Stretch

Chicago is having a great season, as expected. Coming in they would have thought they would get some competition from the likes of Minnesota and Cleveland, but that just hasn’t been the case. So they are battling themselves as much as anybody else right now. This team’s success is not just a product of being in a weak divisin though. They seem to have everything you need to succeed.

Slugging outfielders Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert are back healthy after missing most of the season. Combined they have only played 39 games but now that they are back the White Sox are right there with the best lineups in baseball. Right now they are 8th in scoring despite being 20th in homers. The extra power in the lineup will make them that much more explosive and put a ton of extra pressure on opposing pitchers.

Andrew Heaney Home vs. Away

  • Home: 4-4, 5.84 ERA, 61.2 IP, 73 Ks, 22 BBs
  • Away: 3-4, 4.89 ERA, 42.1 IP, 53 Ks, 12 BBs

Lance Lynn Home vs. Away

  • Home: 6-2, 1.90 ERA, 71 IP, 81 Ks, 17 BBs
  • Away: 4-1, 2.47 ERA, 43.2 IP, 49 Ks, 18 BBs

On the mound this is really no contest. Heaney was getting hit hard like all of the other pitchers with the Angels, save Ohtani. That hasn’t changed with the Yankees. He has given up 5 homers in 2 starts. Meanwhile, Lynn is looking like a definite Cy Young candidate. Those splits are awesome though technically this is a neutral site game.

New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox Best Bet

Over 9.5

This is a totally new venue, so it is difficult to know for sure how it will play. It definitely does not look big though. Even if Lynn pitches well, which I think he will, Chicago’s bats should have lots of fun against Heaney and his inability to keep the ball in the ballpark.
